    A Simple Song

    Posted on 09/09/09.

    This was my first completely-original VOCALOID work. In retrospect, I don't think I'll be using Luka's English Database again; it's just too far from correct to handle. :S

    Lyrics are in the video description, just double-click the embedded player to go directly there.

    Nice.
    that is the main descriptive adjective I'd use for the song.
    Not too fancy, but well done. The Piano part had in my ears practically now reverb, which I personally would almost never do, but it gave the song this kind of cutsy, sassy drive, so I think it was pretty much ok.

    So this song defineatly gets a *me like!* stamp! (note to self: add *me like!* stamp to smileys)

    For the music part nothing to say it is flawless like music industry standard Wink
    by the way you mastered it yourself ?

    For the vocal part it is kinda hard to understand lyric. It sounds really muddy.
    To remove muddyness just add a low pass filter.
    Basically for vocal today it must achieve "clarity" and "fullness"
    These words i am using commonly referred to frequency range on the audio signal.
    For clarity it is more on the highmid high frequency, boost it until you feel the vocal is enough present(2k to 12k Hz)

    When increasing clarity sibilance like "sss" or "shhh" tend to become harsh (on Hi-Fi monitors these sibilance are ultra revelant), and it is really exhausting for the ears after several hours of listening and you dont want to kill your listeners hear, do you Wink. So de-essing is the way to handle these sibilance.

    For fullness it is around the bass frequency, be clever when boosting low frequency as it can quickly become boomy or muddy. Less is more.

    Ho kinda agree some samples of the english Luka sound strange(i like how she
    pronouce "Fantasy" tho Smile

    Other than the vocal, the song is really cool.

    Ho ya i am still practicing audio mastering and mixdown, so maybe these things i said are wrong, but i prefer to bring objective feedback since we are here for that.

    I think you going somewhere you will probably make a "Hit" one day and be prepared to be famous Very Happy

    Oh yaeh, when I want Luka to sound clearer, I usually mix her english AND Japanese voice and make some phonem engeneering xD

    @AgentJ

    Thanks for the critique. You brought up a lot of excellent points!

    I know it sounds muddy and awkwardly-mixed, but that's because it was my first song and I had no idea how to mix at the time.

    You say high-end and low-end? I'll remember to scoop the EQ next time I use Luka, thanks!

    @Kentai
    That's good thinking. I think I'll try that if I ever use Luka again.

    ya, in my very first song, I had one english line for Luka, it was:

    "Yes, that's my way, that's my way!"

    but the 'my' was so crappy I could not even understand it if I tried. And it was cut off strangely.

    so I just replaced it with a 'ma'.
    End of story.
